The Swift Current SPCA was formed in 1971. It operated as a shelter-less society for a time with individual members accepting strays for adoption. In 1977 an agreement was made with the City of Swift Current to open and operate a shelter on the corner of 11th Ave, W and South Railway St. That shelter was operated from that time until June 16th 1990 when a new facility, located on Knight Crescent was opened following a lengthy fund raising campaign, that shelter remains in operation today. The shelter is run by permanent paid staff along with volunteers, and the organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We also have a successful Used Bookstore which is one of our primary fundraisers, and this is managed and run entirely by volunteers to whom we are extremely grateful.
