Dear Petfinder,

Mom didn’t find me on Petfinder though I think it helped her get to me.

My name is Sheila, I am an 11 month old Collie/Rottweiler and I had been at the pound for 3 months before my family came to get me. I was abused and returned before mom and dad picked me up but they have given me a good home.

My first day here was fun, I got all kinds of cool stuff even a pigs ear which a gobbled down because I had thrown up my lunch on the car ride home.

Dad was unsure of me at first but Mom says I have grown on him now. He even lets me sleep on his side of the bed.

I get to go out to my friends farm, his name is Bruno. At first I was afraid but mom said he was a good boy and we quickly became friends. I get to run off leash with him at the farm and we have a great time. Mom laughs at us and thinks its great till I run through the dill patch and get covered in sticky seeds which she has to pick out.

Mom says I saved her life but I think we saved each other. I am moms Christmas miracle and she is mine.

Thank you for bringing her into my life. I hope others are able to find good homes.

Love

Sheila

“The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and good name, may become traitors to their faith.

The money that a man has he may lose. It files away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.

When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives his master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even unto death.”

“Dear Lisa and all my friends at the Swift Current Humane Society:

Hi! I hope you are well. I am dictating this to my mom as I can’t type very well with these tiny paws.

I stayed with you in October. Thanksgiving weekend two ladies came. They took me on a long car ride to Moose Jaw. It was really neat. I tried to drive, but they did not think that was a very good idea. I had some snacks and I got a new leash and I even got to stop and go pee pee at the side of the road.

We came to a big old house. There were three dogs, Alice, Robin and Mr. Jigs. They barked and barked. I was scared. Mr. Jigs pulled a bit of hair off of my bum. He didn’t bite me but he made me have a little bald spot. There is a container of dog toys and I explored them all and pulled out a couple that I liked. The other dogs each got a new toy to play with.

I went to see Dr. Smith. I don’t really know what happened but I fell asleep and when I woke up I was missing almost all my teeth. The next day I started feeling so much better. The doctor said I had lots of infection. I had to take pills and now I can chew and eat kibble without being in pain.

This is a pretty good place. I sleep in a big soft bed. I have my new brother and sisters. I go on walks in the neighbourhood and best of all they tell me I can stay here as long as I like. So that is why I am writing to you. I want to let you know that I am no longer “on trial” Mom says to ask you to make my adoption final. Thank you for finding me a home and for caring about me.

Love,

Squeak (aka Pippin)”

Just a few friendly reminders for pet owners in this cold weather. Indoor and outdoor cats and dogs both need a fresh water supply during the winter. Outdoor animals should have access to fresh water (not just ice or snow) and to food at all times as the cold weather demands extra calories. As well, cats and dogs need to have access to a shelter free from wind and snow. Outdoor cats can do well with a small shelter with a light bulb as a heat source. Straw bales are great insulators and can be used to line a shelter for cats and dogs both as the straw will also absorb moisture preventing the animals from getting chilled from being damp. Our indoor pets may still wish to have their outdoor excursions but keep in mind the wind chill factor. If your face and hands hurt in the cold, our pets’ paws and ears will feel the same way. Take advantage of the warmer sunnier days to burn off some of the cabin fever that can ensue if your dog hasn’t been able to enjoy her daily walk.

On October 15, 2011 the 2nd Annual Memorial Dog Walk in memory of Alysa Young was held here in Swift Current. Alysa’s family has chosen to honor her memory by contributing to animal shelters to assist with daily operations as animal welfare was very near and dear to Alysa’s heart. This year donations totaling $1309.70 were presented to the Shelter by Alysa’s mother, Michelle. As well, several bottles of bleach, boxes of garbage bags, cat food, dog food and many rolls of paper towel were donated. Included in the cash donations was a cheque for $1000.00 from the Green Braes Highland Dancing Club which Alysa danced with for several years. As well a personal donation was received from Sheila Richardson who recently adopted a dog through our Shelter. To Anderson and Company’s lawyers and staff, many thanks for your donations. To everyone that participated and donated to help the Shelter’s animals, thank you.

The day that Michelle and her parents came to the Shelter to present us with the donations, she and I spoke about Alysa and her true compassion and love for animals. Michelle Young emailed the following to me shortly after we met and I would like to share this with you.
“The idea behind the walk was that Lysa’s family and friends would get together and spend the day remembering Lys on the anniversary of her passing on October 13, 2009. Needless to say, Alysa loved all animals, but her dogs and cats always had a special place in her heart. We know that Lys was smiling as she looked down at her family and friends with all of their dogs who were getting an extra long walk that day as well as getting the opportunity to socialize with each other. At the conclusion of the walk, Lysa’s friends and family wrote messages of love and remembrance on balloons and we released them into the heavens in her memory. I know that Lysa was there in spirit because as the balloons floated into the sky, she guided them right toward and over the Swift Current SPCA.”

To Alysa’s family and friends who organized and participated in this very heartfelt event: Your choice to honor Alysa’s memory in this way will continue to have a widespread impact on the animals in need of our extra care and support. We thank you. Although I never had the privilege of meeting her, all that knew her that I have spoke with had great admiration for her and the work she chose to pursue. Because of her rock solid beliefs in animal welfare, the awareness of the need for loving homes for Shelter animals has again been brought into the spotlight. Thank you Alysa for helping to bring more people to the cause. Your spirit continues to help those animals that meant so much to you.
