The Right Home, The Right Pet

You might already be set up for adoption, but if you’re unsure – or undergoing the process for the first time – please consider the following items and be ready with the required documentation.

Pet Adoption Process

Ready to meet our adoptable animals? Just stop by the shelter at 2101 Knight Crescent, reach us by calling (306) 773-1806, or send us an email at infospcaswiftcurrent@gmail.com.

Step 1:Identification

You must be at least 18 years of age (or have parental consent if under 18) to adopt or foster a pet through the SPCA. We also require proof of identification, such as government-issued photo ID. (We do accept other forms of identification. For more information, please contact our office.)

Step 2:Property

If you rent your home and would like to adopt or foster, we’ll need written permission from your landlord or property owner to confirm that pets are allowed in your apartment, duplex, or house.

Download and sign – and have your landlord or property owner sign – the form below. Then bring it to your appointment with us or email it in advance to infospcaswiftcurrent@gmail.com.

Step 3:Adoption Application

Get started on the canine adoption process by completing the application form. Applications for puppies (aged 8 weeks to 1 year) will have a posted deadline for when the puppies are ready, after which the applications will be reviewed by our staff and the successful candidates contacted. All applications will be kept on file until the Test Drive process is complete and the adoption finalized. You will be required to submit a new application if you’d like to adopt another posted canine or from another posted litter of puppies.

For feline adoptions, please contact the shelter and speak with our staff about the animal(s) you’d like to take home. We’ll ask about what you’re looking for in a feline companion, and even if you’re unsure, we’ll help you with the process of meeting the cats and kittens available for adoption. You will also require a cat carrier to bring your cat or kitten with you from our shelter.

Step 4:Test Drive

We want to ensure that you’re comfortable with the pet you want to adopt, and vice versa.

The Test Drive process provides 14 days over which you can decide if the pet is the right fit for you and your family. We can also lengthen or shorten the duration of the period upon request. Test Drives begin the day the animal arrives at your home.

If you do not choose to move forward with the adoption, all fees minus $20 for canines and $10 for felines will be reimbursed.

If both you and your pet are ready for adoption, we’ll mail your portion of the adoption contract, microchip information, and the animal’s vaccination records.

Step 5:Adoption Contract

You’ll be required to sign an Adoption Contract – your commitment to providing the food, water, shelter, and all other necessities for a happy, healthy animal.

As stated in the contract, it is mandatory that your pet is spayed or neutered. If the animal has not been spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, a deposit will be required and held by us until the surgery has taken place. Since we work with specific vet clinics in Swift Current and surrounding areas, we’ll even book the appointment for you when it’s time. You will then bring the animal to and from its appointment, and we will cover the cost of the surgery. (If you opt for additional blood work, you will be required to cover those costs.) Any extra items, including cones, can be purchased by you. Upon proof of surgery, we will return your deposit.

Please note that we will only cover spay/neuter costs at the clinics we work with in Swift Current and the surrounding area.

Fee Schedule

The adoption fees for all animals include the following:

  • Spay/Neuter (mandatory)
  • Primary course of vaccinations
  • Deworming (2 rounds)
  • Rabies (1yr) vaccination
  • Microchip and its registration

If the animal needs to see a vet for minor issues while on Test Drive, we will cover the appointment. Anything larger-scale will need to be approved by our management before moving forward. The animal will also be sent home with enough food to transition them to a new food if you wish.
